About the Job:
FINCA is seeking a Chief Operating Officer for its microfinance bank startup in Owerri, Nigeria. S/he will be responsible for providing strategic direction and daily management of the business function and driving growth of the business in alignment with company strategy, the overall mission and vision of organization, and industry best practices.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Lead product design and development;
- Translate market intelligence into business strategy;
- Manage and develop organization’s front-end employees;
- Ensure that the activities of the business team support the social and financial goals of the company;
- Maximize outreach in organization’s target segments, and emphasize customer service as a paramount company value;
- Responsible for establishing the business function (including all policies and procedures) and ensure that activities and strategies of the business department support organization’s mission with a minimum of risk and a maximum of efficiency;
- Share responsibility for the overall performance and activities of the organization's subsidiary, and be a core contributor for the strategy formation for the company.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Commerce or related discipline (Masters’ Degree is preferred);
- Minimum 4 years of experience in a financial institution directly managing the business outcomes of a significant branch or region or leading a national operation. Preference is for such experience within a regulated financial institution and in areas related to deposit mobilization and lending at the micro-enterprise or SME level. Highly beneficial if the candidate has experience scaling up financial services in a start-up scenario;
- Experienced in developing and implementing business growth plans for financial institutions;
- Experience managing and motivating a large staff;
- International experience desirable, exposure within the Africa region and Nigeria an asset;
- Thorough understanding of business and operational risk of a financial institution is essential;
- Proficient in MS Office suite (particularly Excel), and experienced in core banking software (experience with FLEXCUBE retail is a benefit);
- Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Igbo or other local language desired.
