FINCA International is seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO) , who thrives in dynamic environments to be part of the establishment and management of FINCA's regulated microfinance bank start-up in Owerri, Nigeria.
The COO will be responsible for providing strategic direction and daily management of the Business function and driving growth of the business in alignment with company strategy, the overall mission and vision of FINCA, and industry best practices (particularly as relates to client protection). This includes leading product design and development, translating market intelligence into business strategy, managing and developing FINCA's front-end employees, and ensuring that the activities of the Business team support the social and financial goals of the company, maximizes outreach in FINCA's target segments, and emphasizes customer service as a paramount company value.
As a core member of the start-up team, the COO will be responsible for establishing the Business function (including all policies and procedures) and will ensure that activities and strategies of the Business Department support FINCA's mission with a minimum of risk and a maximum of efficiency. As a member of the Management Board, s/he shares responsibility for the overall performance and activities of the FINCA subsidiary, and is a core contributor to strategy formation for the company.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Commerce or related discipline (Masters' Degree is preferred)
- Minimum 4 years of experience in a financial institution directly managing the business outcomes of a significant branch or region or leading a national operation. Preference is for such experience within a regulated financial institution and in areas related to deposit mobilization and lending at the micro-enterprise or SME level. Highly beneficial if the candidate has experience scaling up financial services in a start-up scenario.
- Experienced in developing and implementing business growth plans for financial institutions
- Experience managing and motivating a large staff
- International experience desirable, exposure within the Africa region and Nigeria an asset
- Thorough understanding of business and operational risk of a financial institution is essential
- Proficient in MS Office suite (particularly Excel), and experienced in core banking software (experience with FLEXCUBE retail is a benefit)
- Fluency in English is required; fluency in Igbo or other local language desired
